Erik Wagner CEO

Mr. Wagner has been a co-founder, board member and held executive management positions in two venture backed spinal implant companies including Spinal Concepts (1996-2004) and Flexuspine (2007-2014). At Spinal Concepts, he and his partners raised over $40 million in venture capital leading the company to profitability in less than six years on sales exceeding $10 million/month and growing at 70% CAGR. He left Spinal Concepts following the sale of the company to Abbott Labs for $170 million in 2003. His proven record for innovation and leadership continued at Flexuspine where he served as CTO & CEO and led the development and clinical investigation of the world’s first spinal segmental reconstruction device. He is a named inventor on over 80 patents for medical devices ranging from spinal implants to cardiovascular atherectomy devices. He continues to serve as a business consultant and advisor to medical device startups and investor groups.

Adam Deitz Founder and CTO

Adam Deitz is the founder and CTO of Ortho Kinematics. Before founding Ortho Kinematics in 2006, he accumulated ten years of experience in medical product commercialization as a strategy consultant, advising startup and multinational device, diagnostic, and pharmaceutical companies on new product strategies.

During his consulting career, Mr. Deitz specialized in developing and executing launch and growth strategies for over fifteen new medical technologies, contributing as a strategy advisor to product leadership teams as well as an "on the ground" launch manager. During the latter part of his consulting career, Mr. Deitz became deeply involved in medical diagnostics, leading the development and commercialization of four new diagnostic technologies. Through his consulting experience, Mr. Deitz developed a strong expertise in all aspects of medical product commercialization as well as a well-rounded perspective regarding what does and does not work in launching new medical diagnostics.

Mr. Deitz began his strategy consulting career at Booz-Allen & Hamilton. He then proceeded to work at a series of smaller, more specialized firms prior to founding Ortho Kinematics. Mr. Deitz holds a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Chip Wade, PhD. CPE | Chief Science Officer

Dr. Wade earned a Ph.D. in Biomechanics from Auburn University in 2004, then completed a post doctoral fellowship in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. While serving on faculty at the University of Mississippi, Dr. Wade began work on his second Ph.D. in Finance with an emphasis in Risk Management, which he completed in 2011. In addition, Dr. Wade served as the Director of Research at the Andrews Institute from 2007 to 2008. Dr. Wade is responsible for the development of strategic research initiatives and clinical programs for enhanced/improved patient care and measurable outcomes. In addition, Dr. Wade directs the efforts for industry collaborations across the healthcare sector and insurance industry.

Ken Walker VP of Clinical Operations

Ken has 18+ years experience in the orthopedic industry with over 8 years specifically dedicated to spine. He joined OKI in May 2010.

Prior to joining Ortho Kinematics, Ken served as the Director of Clinical Education and Support for Vidacare's Bone Access Division. At Vidacare, he launched the OnControl Bone Access Bone Biopsy and Vertebroplasty needle systems. From 2006-2009 he served as the Director of Medical Education for Zimmer Spine/Abbott Spine where is he was responsible for Surgeon and Sales Rep Training programs. His orthopedic career includes employment with Centerpulse Orthopedics (1999-2004) where he developed one of the industry's first in-house cadaveric surgeon training centers. He also assisted with integration during Zimmer's acquisition of Centerpulse in 2003. At Zimmer he served as the Global Director of the Zimmer Institute in Warsaw, IN (2004-05).

Over his career, he and his training teams have provided education and training programs for over 3000 US and International surgeons and over 1500 sales representatives. He has conducted surgeon training in 10 different countries. Before working on the corporate side of orthopedics, he was a sales associate for Wright Medical, Sulzer Orthopedics, and Osteotech.

Ken has degrees in both business management and nursing from Louisiana Tech University and currently holds a registered nurse license. As a RNFA, he assisted in over 750 orthopedic procedures.

Jeff van Raaphorst VP of Sales

Jeff has over twenty-seven years of medical device experience. His first ten years were with U.S. Surgical where he began as a sales associate before transitioning to management. He then joined Benton Biomedical; an independent spinal distributor representing Medtronic and spent ten years growing their distributorship to over sixty million dollars in annual sales. Mr. van Raaphorst served as Vice President of Sales and as a co-principal involved in all aspects of the business. In 2009, he joined Medtronic as a direct manager and led a southwest sales team for the next six years. Mr. van Raaphorst joined Ortho Kinematics, Inc. in August of 2015 as an Area Vice President where he combined his strong clinical hardware experience with spinal diagnostics.

Jeff has been married for thirty years to Christine and they have three children. He is also the radio color analyst for Arizona State Football. He has an undergraduate degree from the Arizona State University and also a Master’s in Business Administration from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State.

Chris White VP of Finance

Mr. White has over 15 years of experience in accounting and finance within the biotechnology, independent power and manufacturing industries. His experience includes financial reporting for publically traded companies, developing infrastructure and controls for rapid growth, strategic business planning, driving business performance, business turnaround, expansions, development projects and acquisitions.

Prior to joining Ortho Kinematics, Mr. White consulted for several companies providing strategy, business planning and operational support. Projects included serving as interim CEO during a turnaround project for a manufacturing company, advising on international debt financing for a company serving the oil and gas industry and providing due diligence and business planning on independent power and manufacturing projects. From 2008 to 2011, Mr. White worked for BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he managed financial reporting and focused on projects to improve and streamline finance processes. Prior to joining Biocryst, Mr. White worked for Harbert Management Corporation, where he provided financial management to the Power Group, a part of Private Capital, which invests in the independent power industry.

Mr. White is a Certified Public Accountant and received a B.S. in Business Administration from Auburn University and a Masters of Business Administration from The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

George Malcolmson, MD VP of R&D

Dr. George Malcolmson brings over ten years of experience in the health care industry, primarily focused on spine research and development.

After completing his BS in Mechanical Engineering at Yale University, Dr. Malcolmson joined Dr. Manohar Panjabi in his Biomechanics Lab to study the effects of motion preserving devices on the lumbar spine. In addition to the academic studies, he also worked closely with Dr. Panjabi to develop his posterior dynamic stabilization implant, the Stabilimax NZ. Later he went on to work for Applied Spine Technologies, where he was an integral part of the R&D team that took the Stabilimax NZ to market.

Dr. Malcolmson earned his MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he focused his electives on spine surgery and research. His pursuit took him to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City for a Spine Research Fellowship with Dr. Daniel Green, and Boston, MA where he worked in the Anticipatory Medical Devices Group at the Hansjorg Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.

Prior to joining Ortho Kinematics, Dr. Malcolmson held a senior role at Alphatec Spine in Carlsbad, CA, where he led a team to develop the next generation of interbody spinal implants. Dr. Malcolmson currently resides in Austin, Texas. He enjoys coaching sledge hockey and cycling in his spare time.

Annie Burke VP of Human Resources

Annie Burke joined the Ortho Kinematics team in early 2015. Ms. Burke brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience having spent the last ten years in the field of Human Resources. Prior to joining Ortho Kinematics, Ms. Burke directed the Human Resources programs for a number of healthcare facilities operated in the Austin area. During this time, she implemented strategic recruiting practices and compensation plan designs that improved employee retention and bottom line results. Ms. Burke is experienced in training fellow Human Resource professionals over policy, financial practices, and state and federal regulation compliance.

Ms. Burke spent the earlier part of her career nationally sourcing and recruiting Physicians and Executive-level positions for Seton Family of Hospitals. She attended the Concordia University Texas Graduate program for a Master’s of Business Administration. Mrs. Burke also graduated Concordia University’s School of business Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Human Resource Management. She is a member of the Austin chapter of SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) and the Austin Technology Council. Ms. Burke currently resides in Austin, Texas and is an avid fan of the local music scene.

Jerry DeVries 

Jerry DeVries is a co-founder and managing director of TEXO Ventures, an early stage healthcare venture capital company. He has a passion for healthcare, especially in the areas of marketing, strategic planning and business development. Previous to TEXO Ventures, he was a general partner and founding member of Path4 Ventures. While there, Jerry helped to organize a joint effort with Austin Ventures in 2004 to co-invest in Spinal Restoration and LDR Spine. At Path4 Ventures, Jerry pioneered the kind of early-stage, hands-on focus expanded upon at TEXO Ventures.

Jerry DeVries has over 20 years of health care experience and was formerly the Vice President of U.S. Marketing for Centerpulse Orthopedics and Sulzer Medica, acquired by Zimmer in 2003. DeVries was a member of the executive team responsible for the turnaround of Centerpulse Orthopedics as it rebounded from the largest product recall ever in orthopaedic devices. Jerry introduced an innovative legal strategy and championed the approach, resulting in a successful recovery for Centerpulse. Prior to his marketing role, he held various leadership positions in business development, strategic planning, engineering and organizational development. Mr. DeVries sits on the boards of Intercede Health, Televero Health, Alafair Biosciences and Ortho Kinematics.

DeVries earned a M.B.A. from Baylor University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana State University.

John Rodakis 

John Rodakis has advised companies as an investment banker, a management consultant, and an angel investor for much of his career. Mr. Rodakis currently leads GateBridge Investments, and was previously a Principal with Golden Gate Capital. He led Golden Gate in its first technology buyout transaction and oversaw the corporate division's conversion to an independent company.

He was initially a consultant at McKinsey & Company, and since then has had a long career involving investing in and working alongside technology companies. Mr. Rodakis later worked with Broadview Associates, then a leading M&A technology bank, as a technology M&A investment banker. Additionally, he was with Bessemer Venture Partners, an esteemed venture capital firm.

John Rodakis has a B.S. in molecular biology from Southern Methodist University and earned an MBA from Harvard University.

Nelson Jaeggli, MD 

Nelson Jaeggli, MD brings a unique combination of expertise in both financial management and clinical medicine. He is a partner at Southwell Capital LP, an investment firm focused on public, private, and alternative investments. Previously, he spent six years as an analyst, and then Managing Director for Southwell Partners LP, a Dallas based hedge fund that invested in small-cap public and private companies. Dr. Jaeggli is also a board-certified, Emergency Medicine physician actively practicing in North Texas. He is the facility Medical Director for the First Choice Emergency Room in Garland, TX. Currently, Dr. Jaeggli sits on the advisory board of Global Neuro-Diagnostics, a medical company focused on seizure diagnostics.

Dr. Jaeggli received his BA from Columbia College, and earned his MD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Gary Stevenson 

Gary Stevenson is co-founder and Managing Partner of MB Venture Partners, a Memphis-based venture capital firm that provides capital and strategic direction to life sciences start-ups. Gary co-founded MB Venture Partners in 2001 after six years in health care investment banking and research. He also spent seven years in a variety of general management roles with Abbott Laboratories, one of the largest and most diversified health care companies in the world. Gary holds an undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Missouri. He also received an MBA from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He is a certified public accountant and a chartered financial analyst. Gary is a board member or observer for several MBVP portfolio companies, including several in the musculoskeletal medical device industry.
